While Lexus is constantly pursuing innovation, we also encourage others to do the same. That's why we've partnered with Scholastic to develop the Lexus Environmental Challenge, a nationwide program that empowers middle and high school students to make a positive impact on the environment and rewards them with more than $1 million in scholarships and grants.
This year's Grand Prize-winning teams received $75,000, as well as a sculptural cistern created by Florida's renowned environmental artist Jefre.
The two winning teams weren't afraid to dream big. The sixth graders of Jersey City's "Climate Academy Team" educated local schools about the hazardous effects of litter and pollution on our oceans. They also raised awareness by stenciling the words "Dump No Waste: Drains to Ocean" on area storm drains.
Meanwhile, Honolulu's "Dream Team" educated people around the world about renewable energy sources such as wind turbines, solar panels, fuel cells and hydropower. These high school students created videos, blogs and a Web site in multiple languages.
